Rising energy prices, pressure to reduce emissions and the ongoing decarbonisation process are forcing Czech businesses to seek new energy solutions. One of the most dynamically developing segments is Battery storage, which enables more efficient use of renewable energy sources, the smoothing out of peak demand and an increase in energy self-sufficiency. Although the Czech battery storage market is still in its infancy, companies with many years’ experience and proprietary technologies are already making their mark on it.
Among the pioneers in this sector is the FENIX Group, which, through its subsidiary AERS, has been developing Battery storage systems since 2016. Thanks to its early entry into the market, the company has a head start, particularly in the area of control systems and functionalities tailored to Czech conditions. Its solutions are now used by hundreds of households and dozens of industrial customers, including large containerised systems designed to stabilise the electricity grid.
Typical customers for battery storage systems are medium-sized manufacturing companies seeking ways to optimise their energy costs. In this context, the storage systems are used to smooth out peak demand, eliminate micro-outages, enable smart trading on the spot market, or contribute to grid flexibility. Recently, there has been a significant increase in interest in large stand-alone storage systems for providing power balancing services to ČEPS, which currently accounts for the majority of demand.
Market developments are also bringing new technological and security requirements. FENIX Group is responding by expanding its portfolio to include both compact and large-scale industrial storage solutions, whilst placing an emphasis on cyber security and local manufacturing. Large BESS solutions utilise Czech inverters from Škoda Electric, which ensures control over both hardware and software. Battery lifespans now typically range from 15 to 20 years, and capacity degradation is gradual over time, making Battery storage a long-term sustainable investment.
