self-regulating cables

Heating cables that adjust their output depending on the ambient temperature. Unlike resistance cables, they can be cut to any length. They are primarily designed for process heating and for pipe freeze protection, roof gutters and downpipes from frost and snow.

Whilst a standard resistance heating cable heats evenly along its entire length and is at risk of localised overheating if heat dissipation is blocked, a self-regulating cable automatically adjusts its heating output to the ambient temperature at any point along its length. However, this self-regulating capability is offset by their high cost compared to resistance cables, which is why self-regulating cables are primarily used for industrial applications.

In terms of design, a self-regulating cable consists of two copper conductors, encased in a semi-conductive heating core, a protective braid and a modified polyolefin sheath. As the ambient temperature rises, the resistance of the heating core increases, thereby reducing its power output. Conversely, as the temperature falls, the cable’s power output increases. The cables can therefore touch one another, cross over, or pass through environments of different temperatures without the risk of overheating or burning out.

We offer self-regulating cables in four power ratings for various types of applications:

  • 10 and 15 W/m for pipe freeze protection
  • 20 and 33 W/m for process heating, and for protecting roofs, gutters and downpipes

As self-regulating cables can be cut to any length (the only restriction being the maximum length depending on the fuse rating), standard circuits are not provided; instead, accessories (KIT No. 4) must be used with the cables to terminate them (close the electrical circuit) and connect the connecting lead (the so-called ‘cold end’). Although self-regulating heating cables automatically adjust their output depending on the ambient temperature, they never switch off completely. Therefore, appropriate regulation is also required for self-regulating cables.
