Pipe freeze protection involves protecting both metal and plastic pipes. The cable is fixed directly to metal pipes; plastic pipes must first be wrapped in metal tape – ideally self-adhesive aluminium tape or foil. After installation, the heating cable is covered along its entire length with self-adhesive aluminium tape. The self-adhesive aluminium foil helps to transfer heat from the cable sheath to the protected pipework. Special heating cables with an integrated thermostat and plug are manufactured for pipe freeze protection. The contact thermostat automatically switches the heating cable on when the pipe temperature drops below 3°C; the cable is available in lengths of up to 50 metres. Thanks to the plug and the integrated thermostat, installation is very straightforward and requires no specialist connection to the electrical system. The cable is therefore particularly suitable for DIY installations in non-commercial or residential properties.
